The Secrets of Centenarians’ Genetic Code: A New Treatment for Cardiovascular Disease

A new treatment for cardiovascular disease could be derived from the genetic code of centenarians

A large part of the reason why some people live longer than average is due to their DNA. An article published in the European Heart Journal shows that this genetic gift could be replicated even by those who lack it. A new innovative therapy is possible that can prevent and fight cardiovascular disease through the rejuvenation of blood vessel.

The I.R.C.C.S. conducted the study. The study, conducted by the I.R.C.C.S. Multimedica and Department of Medicine, Surgery, and Dentistry, Salerno Medical School University of Salerno, supported by the Cariplo Foundation and Italian Ministry of Health, focus on the gene encoding the BPIFB4protein. The same research group identified in the past a variant of the gene called LAV (\”longevity-associated variant\”) that is prevalent among people older than 100. Researchers have now inserted the LAV -BPIFB4 into the DNA in animal models that are particularly susceptible to atherosclerosis, and consequently to cardiovascular disease.

Annibale Puca, Coordinator of a Research Team at the University of Salerno as well as at I.R.C.C. MultiMedica’s results were extremely encouraging. \”We observed a significant improvement in endothelium function (the inner surface blood vessels), as well as a reduction in atherosclerotic artery plaques and an overall decrease in inflammation.\”
