The Stem Cell Retinal patch is a new treatment for age-related macular degeneration

Macular degeneration is treated with a retinal patch containing stem cells
Researchers in California developed a patch of retinal stem cells that can improve the vision for people suffering from age-related macular deterioration.

Researchers at the University of California Santa Barbara conducted a 12-month clinical trial in which they implanted stem-cell-derived ocular cell in two patients. The results of this study were published in Nature Biotechnology on Monday.

Macular degeneration affects those over 50. It affects central vision, such as reading vision, while surrounding vision remains normal. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, AMD affects 1.8 million Americans over 40. It is also the most common cause of permanent loss of vision in close-up for people 65 and older.
