Thymus Shrinkage Contributes To Atherosclerosis
Today, we would like to draw attention to a study which shows a link between atherosclerosis, and the age-related shrinkage of the thymus. The thymus is the most important immune organ.
Atherosclerosis and the adaptive and innate immune system
The thymus functions like an army base, where T cells are developed and trained to be the soldiers in the adaptive immune system. As we age, our thymus shrinks and its ability to train T cells decreases. The immune cell-producing tissues turn into fat and slowly waste away. This process is called thymic devolution.
