AI clones created from data collected by users pose uncanny dangers
Imagine, if you will, a digital doppelganger. Created by artificial intelligence, a clone who looks, speaks and acts just like you. It reflects your every mannerism in a spooky way. How would you react to this?
This is the question that our research at the University of British Columbia focuses on. It’s now possible to digitally reproduce an individual’s behavior and appearance using deep-learning technology, such as voice conversion, interactive deepfake apps, and virtual actors.
The mirror image created by artificial intelligence, also known as an \”AI-clone,\” could have a profound impact on our perception of ourselves, our relationships and the society. Our paper, published in the Proceedings of the ACM on Human Computer Interaction, identified three risks that AI replicas pose: doppelganger phobia, identity fragmentation, and living memories.
