Scientists create the world’s first edible rechargeable battery
Scientists at the Instituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Italy have created the first edible and rechargeable batteries. The battery can be used for edible electronics such as health diagnostics, food monitoring and edible soft robots.
Edible Rechargeable Batteries
In March, the proof-of concept battery cell study appeared in an article in Advanced Materials. The team of researchers replaced the traditional components in a battery with everyday materials. Mario Caironi – the scientist who coordinated this project – explained that \”the battery is only made from nontoxic and edible materials.\” The materials used in the battery are all either food-derived or considered to be food or food additives.
