Transhumanism: a solution to human problems
Unexpected accidents can change a person’s life forever. Traumatic brain injury patients face long-term physical and mental challenges. For example, they may have trouble with their working memories, which can affect their longevity and education. Transhuman aids, such as prosthetics, can be used to solve human challenges if they are used correctly.
In a nutshell: Transhumanism is the notion that technology can be used to overcome biological limitations. We can improve ourselves and our world by using rational means, just as we do with other things. It’s just a concept and not a description of a futuristic cyborg.
It is understandable to be concerned that such technologies could interfere with the natural world. It is true. It is not enough to ask if something is natural or not before deciding if it is good or bad. Many natural things, like diseases and parasites are horrendous, and our moral interest lies in intervening to improve the situation. It is not the question of whether a technology is natural that is important, but what are all the possible outcomes, both good and bad, as well as the probability. People who worry that we will lose our ‘natural humanness’ have forgotten how far we’ve already come as a species.
