Tuberculosis and the Accelerated Ageing of Cells

Tuberculosis causes premature cellular aging

Tuberculosis is a potentially dangerous infectious disease that can be caused by a bacterium known as Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria can affect other organs as well.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tuberculosis bacteria affected 1.7 billion people in 2018. This is roughly 23%. The CDC reported that in 2020 there were 7,174 TB infections and 13,000,000 people in the United States who had latent tuberculosis (the bacteria are present in the body, but they do not cause illness).

Even after successful treatment for tuberculosis survivors are at increased risk of recurrent infections and death. Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine published a new study recently that found the cells of animals and humans who recovered from tuberculosis aged prematurely by up to 12-14 years.
