Two studies show promising results for self-administration of wet AMD drugs.

Wet AMD drugs could soon be self-administered

There may be a new drug that treats wet age related macular degeneration.

Researchers at the University of Birmingham conducted two studies that showed eyedrops could be used to deliver drugs against age-related macular (AMD), the wet form of the disease.

What is age-related Macular Degeneration?

AMD is the pathology of retina. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eyes, and it is similar to film used in non-digital cameras. The retina creates two-dimensional images that are then transferred to the brain as electrical neural impulses. The macula is an oval-shaped area near the center of the eye’s retina. It is responsible for high-resolution central color vision. The macula becomes damaged in AMD and this can affect or prevent color vision. AMD is progressive but does not affect peripheral vision. The disease is available in two types, dry and wet. Unfortunately, the latter form is more prevalent and incurable. The highest risk factor of AMD is the age. This disease usually affects patients older than 50.
