New UCLA study shows that curcumin can improve memory and mood
Curcumin, which is found in turmeric has been previously shown in laboratory studies to have anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidant properties. Curcumin, which is found in turmeric, has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
The study’s first-author, Dr. Gary Small of UCLA’s Longevity Center and the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior’s geriatric division, believes that curcumin’s effects may be due to the fact that it reduces brain inflammation. This has been associated with both Alzheimer’s and major depression.
The placebo-controlled, double-blind study included 40 adults aged between 50 and 90 who suffered from mild memory problems. The participants were randomly assigned either to receive a placebo, or 90 milligrams twice daily of curcumin for 18 months.
