Researchers uncover 2 pathways of aging, and offer new insights into promoting healthspan

University of California San Diego bioengineers and molecular biologists have uncovered key mechanisms that explain the mysteries of ageing. They identified two distinct pathways that cells take during aging, and developed a way to genetically programme these processes in order to prolong lifespan.

Science published a description of the research on July 17.

The aging of individual cells determines our lifespan as humans. Researchers studied the aging of the budding yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae to determine if different cells age the same way and with the same cause. This model is a good one for studying mechanisms of aging and the aging pathways of skin and stem cell.
