Ageing is more complicated than we thought
Summary: A recent study on the aging process reveals an unexpected connection between mitochondrial health and protein shape.

Each day, every cell in the human body undergoes thousands of chemical reactions. To perform their functions, tiny protein molecules are folded into specific shapes. Misfolded protein is the cause of some of the most devastating and common diseases of aging. These include Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s. The main focus of aging-related research is to find ways to keep proteins in shape and stop misfolded protein from disrupting cellular functions.
