Uncovering the gene behind aging symptoms: A breakthrough in anti-aging therapies

Scientists identify gene that triggers ageing symptoms

Around 2018, we need crisper pills to do this.

According to an increasing body of research, the steady march of ageing might not be as steady as it seems. A team at the University at Buffalo isolated a gene that controls the senescence process, which stops cells from multiplying and causes aging symptoms. They found that the effect spreads easily between neighboring cells. This gene is a key target for future research into anti-aging therapies and cancer treatments.

The number of times that living cells can divide is limited. After this limit, they become senescent or dead cells. Over time, these senescent cell buildup in the body can lead to physical symptoms associated with aging such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis. On the other side, if you stop senescence, it can cause cancer as the cells will continue to multiply unchecked.

Scientists have developed a new drug class called senolytics to remove these senescent senescents cells. These drugs were found to increase the life expectancy of mice up to 35 percent and to keep them healthier for longer.
