Study reveals new clues about stem cell rejection
Scientists discovered in 2006 a method to \”reprogram\”, or convert, mature cells (adult skin cells for example) into stem cells. These cells could in theory give rise to any organ or tissue in the body. Many believed it was just a matter time before this revolutionary technique made its way to the clinic, and brought about a regenerative medical revolution.
The immune system would not reject the cells because they were derived from the same patient, which was both the donor as well as the recipient.
iPSCs may not be the panacea that many hoped for, due to unforeseen setbacks. One of these is the preclinical discovery that iPSC derived cells are often rejected by the body, even when they have been reintroduced.
