Uncovering the role of cryptic transcription in mammalian aging

Ageing and cryptic transcription in stem cells of mammalian mammals

It has proven difficult to determine what causes the visible signs of ageing. Researchers from Baylor College of Medicine, along with collaborating institutions, have found that an aging stem cell’s cryptic transcription is higher than it was previously.

In the journal Nature Aging, the team reports that cryptic transcript occurs when a mechanism in cells that controls it breaks down as they age. These findings suggest strategies to control cryptic transcript could have pro-longevity benefits.

In previous work, Weiwei Dang said that cryptic transcripts in yeasts and other worms are not only a sign of aging, but they can also be a cause. He is an assistant professor at Baylor’s Huffington Center on Aging and molecular genetics. \”Reducing this aberrant transcription lengthened the lifespan of these organisms.\”
