Researchers discover new marker of cancer cell motility
The scientific field of Physics of Cancer has found an application in oncology. Researchers at Leipzig University are leading this research. It is an important milestone in the development of a new field of research, as it has been proven to have clinical relevance. The team created a digital pathology marker for cancer cells motility based on tissue and cellular mechanics.
The marker provides new information about breast cancers, which will improve the ability of predicting the risk for metastasis even after a decade. Researchers have published their findings in Physical Review X.
Pablo Gottheil, a doctoral researcher from the Leipzig University research group headed by Professor Josef Alfons Kas, found that the collective transition of cancerous cells into motility – known as \”unjamming\” in the specialist community – significantly increased the risk of distant metastatic disease.
