Unlocking AI Potential and Open Data – How Data Driven Science is Revolutionizing Scientific Discovery

Data-Driven science: How AI, open data and the Internet of Things will revolutionize scientific discovery
Dr. ryan brikman, vice president and director of research at dotmatics

In films, scientists have been portrayed as elderly people wearing white lab coats and sitting at a table filled with fluorescent liquids. Today’s reality is very different. Scientists, in their hoodies and sitting at monitors, are increasingly becoming data jockeys. In modern labs, robots handle the materials and lab notebooks have been converted to electronic format in data centers that hold vast amounts of information. Data pulled from the cloud is used to fuel scientific discoveries today, just as Bunsen burners did in the past.

The advances in technology and, especially, instrumentation have enabled scientists to collect data and process it at an unprecedented level. Scientists are now confronted with huge datasets, which require sophisticated analytical techniques and computational tools in order to extract meaningful insights. It also poses significant challenges: how do you manage and store these large datasets and ensure they are of high-quality and reliable data?
