AI can help find new minerals on Earth and other planets
Minerals are essential for the development of any civilization. In a technologically advanced society, minerals (and rare elements that they contain) have become highly sought-after. Most mineral deposits were discovered by perseverance and chance in the past.
Scientists have realized in the past 200 years that minerals do not appear randomly. Over 5,000 minerals are found on Earth in what is called a paragenesis. A mineral assemblage is formed by a set of physicochemical rules. For example, a specific chemical composition in the host rock.
By analyzing patterns of mineral association, a machine-learning model can be used to predict the location of minerals on Earth – and possibly other planets.
