Dr. Erwin Gianchandani, Ph.D. is Assistant Director for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships, U.S. National Science Foundation, leading the newly established TIP Directorate (https://new.nsf.gov/tip/leadership).

TIP Directorate focuses on leveraging the nation’s diverse talent pool in order to advance critical technologies and address pressing societal and economical challenges. It also aims to accelerate the translation of research findings from the lab to the market and society. This will improve U.S. Competitiveness, grow the U.S. Economy, and train a diverse workforce to fill future high-wage positions.

Before becoming Assistant Director of TIP, Dr. Gianchandani was the Senior Advisor for Translation, Innovation and Partnerships, and he worked with colleagues from NSF, government agencies, industry, and the academia to develop plans for the TIP Directorate.

Dr. Gianchandani served as the NSF’s deputy assistant director of Computer and Information Science and Engineering for six years. He also held the position of acting assistant director twice. In addition to his leadership of CISE, he was responsible for the implementation of a $1 billion budget annually, strategic planning and human resources, as well as the oversight of a team of more than 130.

During that time, Dr. Gianchandani led the development of and launched several new NSF Initiatives, including the Smart & Connected Communities Program, Civic Innovation Challenges, Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research and the National Artificial Intelligence Research Institutes.

Dr. Gianchandani, who joined NSF in 2012 as the first director, was the founding director of the Computing Community Consortium. He provided leadership to the computing community by identifying and pursuing bold and high-impact research areas such as health IT and sustainable computing.

Dr. Gianchandani has a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in biomedical technology. He received the Distinguished Presidential Rank Award in 2021. This award is given to Senior Executive Service members who have achieved extraordinary achievements.
