Can Greenland Sharks Increase Human Longevity
Exist vertebrates on the planet that have lived since before the United States was founded? Recent research suggests that it is very possible. They exist as sharks, whose fermented flesh is used to make a distinctive Icelandic dish. Scientists found that Greenland Sharks can live up to 500 years.
Scientists may also be influenced by the long lifespans of some creatures in their research to make humans live longer. This is true of the immortal jellyfish and also the Greenland Shark. Jonathan Moens, in a recent article at Atlas Obscura, explores the lessons scientists have learned through their study of long-lived Sharks and what this might mean for humans.
Greenland Sharks’ longevity can be attributed to lifestyle or genetic factors or a combination of both. Holly Shiels, from the University of Manchester, suggested that Greenland sharks might have a unique system to repair damaged genetic material.
