Study finds that bacteria in the gut can alter aging processes
I could be the victim of this.
A research team from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore (NTU Singapore), led by an international researcher, has discovered that the microorganisms found in the gut can alter the aging processes, leading to the creation of food-based treatments to slow them down.
Research conducted in the past 20 years has shown that microbial species play an important role in nutrition and metabolism.
The team, led by Professor Sven Pettersson of the NTU Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine transplanted the gut microbes of old mice (24-month-old) into young mice that were germ free (six-weeks old). After eight weeks, young mice showed increased intestinal growth, as well as the production of neurons within the brain. This is known by the term neurogenesis.
