Tensor Holography MIT Student develops AI learning advancing Holograms
After 2021
Tensor holography, a new technique, can create holograms that are suitable for 3D printing, virtual reality, medical imaging and more. It is also compatible with smartphones.

Liang Shi, a PhD student at MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, said that people used to believe it was impossible to create real-time 3D holograms with consumer-grade computers. He figured out how to reduce the time it takes to make it viable.
The holographic image that we see in movies is being created right now. Shi’s team used a different method than what was originally developed for holograms. The laser beam splits and half of it is used to light the subject, while the other half serves as a reference during the phase of light waves.
We then had computer-generated Holograms. It would have avoided these difficulties by simulating optical setups. However, this would slow down the computation. To avoid this problem, he taught the computer physics.
This breakthrough has made it possible to create holograms in milliseconds using images that contain depth information. iPhone 12 Pro with LiDAR sensor can create real-time 3D Holography. What is even more impressive is that the tensor networks require less than 1MB of memory.
