New evidence shows that leopard geckos are capable of producing new brain cells
This study, published in Scientific Reports is the first one to show that stem cells and new neurons are present in the brain of the leopard gecko.
Researchers at the University of Guelph have identified the stem cells that allow geckos create new brain tissue. This discovery provides evidence that these lizards are also able to regenerate brain tissue after an injury.
This discovery could be used to replace human brain cells that have been lost or damaged as a result of injury, disease or aging.
The brain is a complicated organ, and there are few treatments available for brain injuries. This is an exciting research area,\” said Professor Matthew Vickaryous at the Department of Biomedical Sciences of the Ontario Veterinary College.
