Hair growth can be accelerated by activating stem cells
UCLA researchers discovered a way to activate stem cells within the hair follicles to promote hair growth. Researchers Heather Christofk, William Lowry and others may be able to develop new drugs for hair growth in people who suffer from baldness, or alopecia. This is hair loss that can be caused by hormonal imbalances, stress, ageing or chemotherapy treatments.
Nature Cell Biology published the research.
Hair follicles stem cells have a long lifespan. They are found in the skin, and they produce hair for the rest of a person’s life. The cells are \”quiescent,\” which means they are normally not active, but quickly become active during a hair cycle. This is when new growth occurs. Many factors regulate the quiescence of stem cells in hair follicles. In some cases, they do not activate and this is what leads to hair loss.
