Translational Medicine: Stem Cells and Genome Editing
The discovery of the derivation and transformation of somatic cells into human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), and the subsequent discovery that these cells can be reprogrammed to become human embryonic stem (hESCs), holds the potential to revolutionize biomedical science and regenerative medical research. This Review focuses on central nervous system disorders and examines how advancements in human pluripotent cells (hPSCs), along with the evolution of genome engineering and genomic technology, can provide realistic opportunities for tackling some of the most complex and devastating disorders.
The advances in stem cell science are opening new doors for their application in the clinic. This is especially true in treating and understanding neurological and neurodegenerative diseases.
