Scientists finish decoding human genome: \”We finally did it\”
Scientists say that this complete picture of the genome can help us better understand our evolution and biology, and also open the door for medical breakthroughs in areas such as aging, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and heart disease.
Karen Miga is the author of six of the studies published on Thursday.
The research is the culmination of decades of hard work. In 2000, the first draft of the genome was revealed at a White House ceremony by two competing entities. An international publicly-funded project led by a U.S. National Institutes of Health agency and a Maryland-based private company called Celera Genomics.
