How a \”superhero\” anti-aging protein was discovered by using hardy volcanic microbes
Scientists who were trying to understand how archaea, a hardy, little creature, could survive in sulfuric acid pools that boil like hot tubs may have discovered the secret to an anti-aging medication. Researchers found that by manipulating the \”super hero protein\” common to archaea as well as humans, they could \”trick\” the cells into acting young. This was done by extending the DNA repair process.
Researchers have previously studied how archaea survived in harsh conditions over billions of year. They determined that the protein ssB1 helped repair DNA damage in organisms. The real eureka moment for the team was when they found out that humans also have their own version of this protein called hSSB1.
