The Mediterranean diet is now well-known far beyond the sea that bears its name, with research confirming its reputation as a health and longevity booster.
People who follow a Mediterranean diet, which is based on plant-based foods, fish and less red meat and dairy, tend to be healthier, as they have lower rates of heart diseases, cancer, dementia and diabetes.
Why? Although there is strong evidence that this combination of foods can extend lifespan, it’s not clear how.
