The secret of the immortal hydra’s ability to regenerate has been revealed
The hydra was named after a serpent monster in Greek mythology that regrows two new heads every time one of its heads is removed. Freshwater hydras are even more remarkable in their ability to regenerate: they can grow an entire hydra from a tiny piece of tissue within a matter of days.
This ability is particularly exciting to biologists, as many of the networks that are involved in healing are found in many animals including humans.
Abby Primack, a researcher, said that \”in other organisms like humans, when our brains are injured, it is difficult to recover because the brain does not have the kind of regenerative ability we see in the hydra.\”
