Human trial of compound with anti-aging effect passes
Urolithin, a biomolecule metabolite found in pomegranates, and other fruits could slow down certain aging processes. Amazentis is an EPFL spinoff that has collaborated with EPFL, the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics and EPFL to publish a paper called Metabolism, which details the results of a clinical trial.
After 50, skeletal muscle mass and strength begin to decline. A recent clinical study involving two EPFL entities – spin-off Amazentis, and the Laboratory of Integrative Systems Physiology, (LISP), showed that urolithin A a compound derived by biomolecules in fruits like pomegranates – could slow this process down by improving the mitochondria – the powerhouses of the cells. The results of this trial were published in a joint paper that also demonstrated the fact that the compound is not harmful to the human body.
Slowing mitochondrial ageing.
