U.S. population grows at lowest rate on record during pandemic
The US population is not increasing.
Census Bureau data released on Tuesday shows that the U.S. population grew the slowest ever in 2021, as the Covid pandemic exacerbated slow migration, an aging populace, and low birthrates.
This year the population increased by only 0.1%, or 392,665 individuals. The increase is smaller than the one seen during the first World War and the 1918 influenza pandemic in the early part of the 20th century. This is also the first year since 1937 when the population increased by less than one million.
The data shows that Washington, New York, and Idaho, Utah, and the surrounding states saw the largest gains in population.
