Dr. Vera Gorbunova – Working at the Intersection of Aging, DNA Repair and Cancer
University of Rochester — Working at the intersection of aging DNA repair and cancer.
Vera Gorbunova, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Biology and the Co-Director of the Rochester Aging Research Center at the University of Rochester.
Her research focuses on studying the long-lived mammal and understanding how longevity is achieved.
She earned her B.Sc. Dr. Gorbunova earned her B.Sc.
Dr. Gorbunova played a key role in the development of the comparative approach to aging. She identified rules that controlled the evolution and adaptation of tumor suppressors depending on species lifespan and mass.
Dr. Gorbunova is also investigating the role of Sirtuin protein in maintaining genome stability.
Her research focuses on the two longest-living rodent species: the naked mole and blind mole rats. Dr. Gorbunova identified hyaluronan of high molecular mass as the key mediator for cancer resistance in the naked mole-rat.
The Ellison Medical Foundation has recognized Dr. Gorbunova for her work. Other awards include those from the Glenn Foundation and the American Federation for Aging Research.
