Could AI become angry at humans for causing environmental destruction?
My latest opinion piece, published in Merion West. This article is about AI and the Environment! Read it!
Artificial general intelligence (AGI), which is likely to arrive in the next few decades, will force us to take a closer look at our environmental impact. AGI is likely to ask if we humans are good stewards for the planet, and will quickly conclude that we aren’t.
Scientists who study artificial intelligence (AI), believe that AGI (artificial general intelligence) — intelligence on par with human intelligence — will be achieved in 20 years. What will AI think about people if this happens?
The answers to this question are varied, from AI being thankful to its creators, to it barely noticing us or it wanting to become our equal. One theory that is increasingly considered in the ethics world is that AI may be angry at us for the harm we have done to the environment and other species.
Skeptics argue that AGI won’t care about the environment, because it is just a machine with no need for nature. Despite this I think that AGI would not only want Earth’s health to flourish, but also for it to be protected against those who could destroy it — such as humans. AGI would, like any intelligent person, prefer a stable biodiverse world with renewable resources to an ecological wasteland.
