William Bains, Dr. Cross-linking the Extracellular Matrix
William Bains, a Cambridge University professor, provides an overview of extracellular interlinks. He explains how AGEs can irreversibly join proteins, and that cross-linking of AGEs appears to be a key factor in aging. Cross-links are especially problematic for the cardiovascular system. They cause arteries to become stiffer with age. This increases blood pressure, and makes a patient more susceptible to a stroke or heart attack. Cross-links may also be involved in complications related to diabetes. Dr. Bains describes the nature and structure of cross-links. He also explains where they accumulate within the body and their surprising role in cooking. He finishes by talking about a drug that is a game-changer in the AGE field and has been tested on human beings.
